CUSEC 2020

Montreal, Canada | January 2020

Talk Summary: Navigating the tech industry can be daunting - its more competitive than ever, and it's growing at a rapid rate. How do you identify your goals and stick to your values while staying your authentic self when stepping into your career and onwards? What can you do to play to your strengths and continue to grow? Is it just me that has imposter syndrome? In the format of a letter to my former self - a college student trying to find her way through the tech industry - I'll share lessons and insights I've learned and things I wish I knew as a college student.

UCSC ACM-W guest meeting

Santa Cruz, CA | November 2019

With the officers of UCSC ACM-W

With the officers of UCSC ACM-W

I spoke at a meeting of the UC Santa Cruz’s Association for Computing Machinery's Council on Women (ACM-W) in November 2019. They invited me to talk to current UCSC students about my experience and journey as a Software Engineer, and took questions from the audience over 2 hours. Connecting with students about their thoughts about the tech industry and providing them insights and advice on how to navigate their CS career is something I’m really passionate about — it’s incredibly motivating to talk to the bright minds in the next generation of Software Engineers.

I moderated a panel at BUILTBYGIRLS’ very first summit in San Francisco, which invited non-binary high school and college students to a day of powerful talks, peer networking, and interactive workshops for navigating a career in technology. During our talk, we talked about the Good, Bad, and Ugly about working in Tech with pioneers in the tech industry and how to navigate our careers and bring our full selves to work. Check out the videos below from the panel!

AltConf 2019

San Jose, CA | June 2019

My talk titled “Pay it Forward by Being You” was given at one of the most popular iOS conferences that happen adjacent to Apple’s WWDC in San Jose, CA. This talk won Paul Hudson’s Hacking With Swift Community Awards 2019 for Most Inspiring Presentation.

Talk Summary: It’s never been a better time to start learning how to code. Technologies are evolving and growing every day, and with Apple’s recent advances in Swift and Swift playgrounds, Apple development has never been easier to try. However in the tech industry, there still exists a large gap between individuals trying to enter the industry as a Software Engineer, and the hiring demands of tech companies trying to fill their engineering roles. This talk will focus on this gap - the leaky bucket we see in the demographics of Software Engineers. We’ll talk about how we as Software Engineers can strengthen the existing Apple developer community by discussing how we can extend a hand to those trying to enter. This will involve topics such as sharing perspectives from non-Software Engineers about the difficulties of breaking the barrier, the unique opportunity that Swift and this Apple developer community can provide, and the power within each and every one of us to impact positive change.

try! Swift Tokyo 2019

Tokyo, Japan | March 2019

My first ever conference talk was at try! Swift Tokyo 2019, where over 1000 iOS enthusiasts from all over the world join for 3 days to learn from each other about Swift. I did the same talk as the one I did at AltConf (above), but delivered the talk in both Japanese and English.
