Youtube - helloMayuko
Mayuko began her Youtube journey in July 2017
She was working as an Senior iOS Software Engineer at Patreon at the time, and was looking for ways to expand her work outside of her full-time job. As discussions around Diversity and Inclusion was starting to ramp up within her company and in the larger tech industry, and she was thinking about ways she can contribute.
Mayuko attended Vidcon 2017 in Anaheim, CA with her team at Patreon launch a new product, and gain more empathy for creators to help her with her iOS work. She was surprised to find, however, that she also gained advice, inspiration, and skills for what would become her first Youtube video — which she realized was her calling for how she could contribute outside of her work. Without any prior experience in video production, she filmed her first video, “a day in the life of a Software Engineer” which has over 4.5 million views today.
Transition into full-time content creation
After working on her Youtube channel as a side-job for 2.5 years, she decided to take a leap to work on videos full-time. She was working at Netflix as a Software Engineer at the time, and felt the timing was right to take a leap towards a new career in media and video production to fully invest her time and energy to making videos to help the next generation of Software Engineers and work on something she truly believes in.
Her Mission in Creating Videos
From the beginning, Mayuko’s passion in creating videos revolves around her drive to help people. In high school, she watched Asian American Youtubers who helped her navigate her teenage years as a first-generation Japanese American, and felt truly inspired by those before her. Youtube helps foster those personal connections through video, where she’d like to help empower and connect with the next generation of Software Engineers.
Her mission to create online content to help people find their way through the tech industry is reflected in her videos talking about her own experiences, and on topics she wished she had heard more about in her college years such as Imposter Syndrome and Emotional Vulnerability. She hopes to create a more empathetic and compassionate tech industry where individuals can express their full selves and create a positive impact in the world.
